Employee Profiles


ARCOM’s staff of 40 professionals represents some of the most innovative and personable specification professionals, writers, editors, computer scientists, and service people in the industry. This column provides brief biographical sketches for just a few of the people serving you at ARCOM.

Michael J. King, FCSI, CCS
Vice President of Engineering Specifications




Mr. King has been with the MasterSpec program for more than 20 years and is the Vice President of Engineering Specifications for ARCOM. He has 41 years’ experience in HVAC design, specifications, and contract administration in Indiana, the District of Columbia, and Virginia. He also worked nine years with MasterSpec at the American Institute of Architects. Mr. King’s experience includes the development of office master specifications for two large architectural/ engineering firms, plus a master specification system for the Northeast Corridor Improvement Project, a $1.75 billion program to rebuild the railroad from Washington, DC to Boston, MA for high-speed train service.

Other projects include Roanoke Memorial Hospitals, which include five major medical facilities in Southwestern Virginia; Montgomery County Courthouse; Bank of Virginia office building; Pittsylvania County Jail and Sheriff’s offices; Augusta County Jail; and numerous school buildings for several counties in Southwestern Virginia. Mr. King is an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and has served on many of its Technical Committees. He has been a member of the Construction Specifications Institute since 1975 and became a Fellow in CSI in 1996. He has served as Chair for several of CSI’s national committees and is currently service as Chair of the MasterFormat Maintenance Task Team. As a student, Mr. King studied Calculus and English composition at Indiana University/ Purdue University and Business Law and Accounting at Roanoke College. His certifications include: Certified Construction Specifier (CCS), 1978 - 2005; Certified Insulation Energy Appraiser (National Institute of Insulation), 2002 - 2005; MasterFormat Accredited Instructor (MAI), CSI, 2005. As a former military aviator, Mr. King likes pictures of aircraft and is fascinated with birds of prey, such as eagles and hawks. He also enjoys getting out on the golf course for a round of golf whenever he has the opportunity.

In my 20 plus years with the MasterSpec program, I have enjoyed the challenge of generating master specifications for use by the profession in general. Most enjoyable is the opportunity to discuss design and construction issues with a wide variety of professionals as well as working closely with an ever-changing committee of professional engineers who share my interest in making MasterSpec the best design tool available.--Mike
