A new 3-story, 78,000-sf school will be located towards the back of a 5.5 acre parcel of the existing school. Upon completion of the new school, the old school will be razed and converted into a well-landscaped parking lot for visitors, teachers, and staff. Cole + Russell Architects teamed up with Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc; they worked with school district officials, local preservationists, and neighborhood residents to create a design that blends well with other buildings in Montgomery’s "Heritage District". The bell tower of the new school is derived from the bell tower that once stood over the entry to the original schoolhouse on this same site. The original bell and limestone slab engraved "Montgomery Special School, 1899" will be a main focal point at the entrance to the new school.
