SECTION 238219 - FAN COIL UNITS

This updated Section specifies hydronic cooling fan-coil units with hydronic or electric heat. It also includes units for concealed installation with external duct connections and units for exposed installation in occupied rooms, with finished cabinets for surface and recessed mounting in ceilings or walls.

Previous Edition: SECTION 15763 - FAN-COIL UNITS, dated 12/99.

This Section was condensed from full-length Section of same number and title.

Full-length Section includes the following:

Stack-type fan-coil units with piping risers
Outdoor-air intake and controls for fan-coil units
Steam coils for both fan-coil units and ducted fan-coil units
Reheat coils and controls for both fan-coil units and ducted fan-coil units
Humidity controls for both fan-coil units and ducted fan-coil units
BAS interface requirements for both fan-coil units and ducted fan-coil units
Refrigerant coils and condensing units for ducted fan-coil units
Manufacturer's field services for testing and demonstration

Summary of Changes: The following changes were made in this edition:

Section number was changed according to the 2004 edition of CSI/CSC's MasterFormat.
"Submittals" Article in Part 1 of the Section Text was revised.
"Extra Materials" Article was deleted from Part 1 of the Section Text.
Manufacturers' names were deleted from Part 2 of the Section Text in favor of including them in schedules on Drawings.
"Configuration," "Materials," "Water Coils," "Electric-Resistance Heating Elements," "Fan," "Fan Motors," "Accessories," and "Control Systems" articles in Part 2 of the Section Text were consolidated into two articles: "Fan-Coil Units" and "Ducted Fan-Coil Units."
- In the "Fan-Coil Units" Article, paragraphs were added for filters, factory piping packages, and controls.
- In the "Ducted Fan-Coil Units" Article, paragraphs were added for filters, outdoor-air dampers, factory piping packages, and controls.
"Source Quality Control" Article was deleted from Part 2 of the Section Text.
"Installation" and "Field Quality Control" articles in Part 3 of the Section Text were revised.
"Connections" Article was deleted from Part 3 of the Section Text.
"Product Characteristics" Article was added to the Evaluations to define the differences between fan- coil units and ducted fan-coil units and to describe the attributes of available filters and controls.
"Product Selection and Application Considerations" Article in the Evaluations was revised to include the advantages of fan-coil units.
"Energy Considerations" Article in the Evaluations was revised to include information about carbon dioxide sensors.
"Environmental Considerations" Article was added to the Evaluations to review ventilation, refrigerants, and indoor-air quality issues.
"LEED Rating" Article was added to the Evaluations to describe methods of using this Section to qualify for LEED credits.
"Metric Rationale" Article was added to the Evaluations.
