Phil Kabza, FCSI, CCS, AIA, is a principal and director of technical services with SpecGuy, providing specifications consulting, continuing education program development, and training services to architects, engineers, and building product manufacturers at www.SpecGuy.com. Specguy is the publisher of CDT One Day at a Time and is an authorized MASTERSPEC trainer.

Phil is a graduate of the University of Michigan College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He has over 30 years experience in architectural and construction quality delivery. His project experience includes health care, K-12 and higher education, corporate, retail project management, specification writing, and contract administration.

His areas of expertise include construction document best practices, risk management, building envelope assemblies, and learning program design.


Phil began using MASTERSPEC as a project architect in 1987, "generating a foot-high stack of red-lined hard copy."  Phil joined the review committee in 1998 and also served as committee chair. "It's what I call a quiet group with a big impact. It represents a 30-year history of contribution to MASTERSPEC content from leading specifiers and architects from around the country." He credits former chairs David Metzger and Marty Bloomenthal for encouraging his involvement with the committee. "They've maintained a tradition of knowledge sharing that continues year-round among the members."

As a Construction Specifications Institute volunteer, Phil has served as Southeast Region and as Charlotte Chapter certification leader, where exam candidates have turned out in record numbers. His writing is well known to national readers from the CSI TeamCS website, The Construction Specifier , and Commercial Builder/Architect magazine.

Phil's family and business partner Nancy Kabza manages their consulting practice SpecGuy. Phil and Nancy are frequent presenters on professional development topics at the CSI Convention, CSI University, and at seminars sponsored by CSI regions and chapters. The Kabzas are in turn managed by their long-haired German Shepherd Dog, Cana Carolina.
